"Warcraft" movie trailer

    06 November 2015

Warcraft fans have had to learn the virtues of extreme patience. Much has transpired over the near-decade since the film adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s ridiculously successful franchise was announced. While other fantasy adventure epics like The Hobbit and Harry Potter have come and gone since Warcraft’s initial announcement, there’s been very little of the movie itself for fans to rally around.

A lot of expectation has been heaped onto both this film and the shoulders of director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code). There are legions of fans worldwide with stratospheric expectations for the cinematic version of the game series they’ve grown to cherish. Understandably, no one wants to be disappointed by Universal and Legendary Pictures’ take on the property.

Fortunately, it’s been a somewhat eventful past week (at the time of writing this) for fans of Warcraft. Things began to happen last weekend with the release of three character images, followed later in the week by a trailer preview, news of new merchandise, and two new character posters of human warrior Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) and Orc Chieftain Durotan (Toby Kebbel) in the film – which you can see below.

Additionally, at BlizzCon 2015 in Anaheim, after much patience and devotion, Legendary/Universal has also rewarded its Warcraft fanbase with the first official Warcraft movie trailer. Give it a watch, above.

Here is an official plot summary for Warcraft that was released by Universal/Legendary:

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

Judging by what’s on display in the Warcraft trailer, audiences could be in for a real treat. In terms of the action and effects, there are elements of Lord of the Rings and Avatar thrown into the mix here, yet the film still manages to retain its own original feel and tempo. The boundary-pushing computer generated imagery, which seems very true to the aesthetic of the original games, should make this first look at Warcraft both pleasing to fans and promising to newcomers. Go on, watch the trailer again – you know you want to.

Made up of a mix of both costumed and motion-captured characters, Warcraft‘s cast also includes Dominic Cooper (Preacher), Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Ben Foster (Lone Survivor), Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief), Clancy Brown (Sleepy Hollow), Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), and Daniel Wu (The Man With The Iron Fists).

Warcraft opens in U.S. theaters on June 10th, 2016.
